At the center of the story is an eccentric count, obsessed with the idea of leaving behind a perfect portrait for future generations. The first painter portrays him realistically — including his imperfections — which provokes the count’s fury and results in the painter’s execution. The second painter presents him as flawless, but the count realizes that the image is not truly him and reacts violently once again. Only the third painter manages to find a solution: he depicts the count during a hunt, in a pose that naturally conceals his flaws. The count is delighted — the painting is both truthful and flattering. While the animation follows the comic-book storyline, a black-and-white documentary segment shows the comic’s author reflecting on art, memory, and the image we leave behind.
